Director of Music
First Congregational Church of Houston TX (FCC), United Church of Christ, seeks a Director of Music (DM) who will help us grow our vibrant music program in new directions. The DM will coordinate and supervise all church service music programs, play the organ for church services, rehearse, accompany and direct the choir, and arrange for guest soloists and instrumentalists. Regular church services are once weekly, as are choir rehearsals. The Reuter Organ Co. 2-manual pipe organ with full pedal board was installed in 1994. It contains 1286 pipes and 19 ranks (1 unenclosed and the rest enclosed) and is voiced to play baroque to modern music. A concert quality Steinway piano is also available in the sanctuary. A number of FCC members who are highly accomplished vocal and instrumental musicians regularly share their talents with the congregation. The Meeting House Choir consists of an enthusiastic mix of trained and amateur volunteers as well as several choral scholars sponsored by an FCC program. FCC has a history of presenting major works for special occasions, combining vocal and instrumental music. In addition, the congregation enthusiastically participates in hymn singing and is willing to try new approaches and new types of music.
The DM position is a part-time salaried position. A Bachelor of Music with courses and experience in choral conducting is required; a Master of Music is preferred. Request information or submit a resume and three references at musicsearch@fcc-houston.org. Application deadline is March 15, 2023.
FCC (www.fcc-houston.org) was founded in 1955 to be an open church and was designated an Open and Affirming congregation in the United Church of Christ in 1998. FCC employees enjoy equal treatment, irrespective of social and ethnic origins, skin color, sexual orientation or gender identity, political opinion or other characteristics and receive equal remuneration for equal work.
