We Loved the Spirituals and Gospel Music!
On Sunday, May 4 the service was devoted
almost entirely to music – African American spirituals, such as Give Me
Jesus, sung a cappella by the Meeting House Choir and guests. And songs
from the Black gospel tradition – rhythmic works that had members of the
congregation clapping with the choir.
"You have to have Kevin Calloway at the
keyboard to carry off this kind of program," says Tracy Shirk, FCC music
director, "He improvises, as is customary in gospel music."
Normally working with classical music, Calloway is a conductor, composer and
vocalist as well as pianist and organist. He's with the Bel Air
Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles.
Solos by Calloway and Shirk enhanced the service, as did choral works and
performances by Mark Jackson and Erika Dotson, two of the students from the
choir of Lone Star College North Harris who sang with FCC's Meeting House
Choir.
