Jorge
Hugo's Legacy
At 65 years of age, when most people retire,
Jorge Hugo moved from Montevideo, Uruguay to start a new life in Houston,
just because it was something he had always wanted to do. Two weeks before
his 80th birthday on June 29, 2007, he moved to Miami.
He left behind an important legacy.
During his 15 years at First Congregational
Church, Jorge launched our annual blood drive, personally donating 40
gallons of blood at FCC and alternate donor sites. He further demonstrated
his caring nature by starting our soup kitchen.
"He owned a hotel in Uruguay," says Naomi
Black, "and he's an excellent cook." FCC "chefs" today make and freeze
some 700 quarts of
soup
each year to donate to the food pantry at Fairhaven United Methodist Church.
From time to time, the soup kitchen makes enough to sell during Coffee, Tea
and Conversation – proceeds from which go toward buying ingredients for
making more soup.
Jorge has four children, all of whom attended
private schools, participated in international exchange programs and learned
English. His two sons live in Miami, and two daughters remain in Uruguay.
