Three FCC Choir members helped delight
audiences at the Wortham's Cullen Theater two weekends in July, in
performances of Gilbert & Sullivan's comic opera Ruddygore.
KeiCee (KC) Newton was in the chorus of
Professional Bridesmaids (including damsels of uncertain vintage). Jeff
Newton was a ghost. Brian Kosior, Jr. was one of four portraits who
morphed into a born-again ghostly ancestor of the lead, Sir Ruthven
Murgatroyd. If it all sounds confusing, remember it's Gilbert & Sullivan
we're dealing with here.
KC
is in the top row, second from right, her glasses and makeup suggest the
"forever bridesmaid" theme.
Because it's G&S, the work was also witty
and fast-paced, with parodies, nonsense and, best of all, great music.
And because the award-winning Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Houston
presented it, Ruddygore was an afternoon or evening well spent.
The G&S Society
of Houston was founded in 1952, a few years before First Congregational
Church got under way. According to Roy Meinke, John and Dorothy Cooper
were active in the early years of both organizations. With that history,
it's even more fun to report that KC is on the Society's Board of
Directors, and Jeff is active with the group's information systems.
Next year,
in July, the group will perform Yeoman of the Guardor The
Merryman and His Maid,
the score for which some consider Sullivan's finest
.
