Heritage Walkway

The Heritage Walkway on the campus of First Congregational Church in West Houston is utilitarian in several ways. First, it provides a pleasant, tree-shaded stroll from the church's main parking area to the Meeting House on the west end of the campus. More importantly, the Walkway provides a brief history lesson on the roots of the United Church of Christ and of Congregationalism--and particularly of First Congregational Church--for anyone walking toward the Meeting House.

Inscribed on plaques within the walkway are the names of many courageous men and women of our faith, who through their actions and words gave daily expression to their belief in God's goodness and love. Inscribed here also are many key events and institutions that through history have served as the embodiment of their faith.

Taken together, these plaques reflect the rich tradition upon which First Congregational is based.

Then, for anyone walking East away from the Meeting House--back toward the everyday world following worship--the Walkway is inscribed with words of encouragement and inspiration that can provide spiritual guidance for our daily lives.

We now invite you into a journey of the Congregational and United Church heritage and, we hope, into your own personal journey. The Heritage Walk from the parking area to the Meeting House remembers people, events, and institutions that have helped make us the people we are today.
